How to clean a washing machine drawer
Cleaning your washing machine drawer can help extend the lifespan of your appliance and keep it running smoothly.
Over time, detergent residue, fabric softener and limescale build up inside your washing machine’s detergent drawer. Left alone, this can lead to mould, bad smells and blocked jets.
Step 1: Remove the drawer. Pull the drawer all the way out. Most machines have a small tab or button at the back — press it and lift the drawer free.
Step 2: Soak in hot soapy water. Fill the sink with hot water and washing-up liquid. Leave the drawer to soak for 10–15 minutes to loosen any residue.
Step 3: Scrub with an old toothbrush. Pay attention to the softener compartment (it has a small siphon inside) and the detergent jets.
Step 4: Wipe the drawer cavity. Use a damp cloth to wipe the housing where the drawer sits. Shine a torch inside to spot any mould.
Step 5: Dry and refit. Let everything dry properly before sliding the drawer back in. Run a hot service wash (90°C, empty drum) once a month to keep the whole machine fresh.
